SWE Summit 2021

Rethinking the Role of Ethics in Engineering

We can’t put on an event like this without inspiring speakers, partners, and sponsors like you. While we may have reached out to you with specific requests, please let us know if you or anyone else would be interested in hosting a talk or breakout session, as described below. Or if there are other ways in which you prefer to support us, we would be incredibly grateful as well!

Mission

We want students across all schools and majors at USC to gain a deeper understanding of what it means to be an ethical engineer in today’s society. As technological tools become more powerful, it is vital that the next generation of engineers understand that although new tools like AI, IoT, etc. have the potential to transform society for the better, they also have the potential to perpetuate existing systemic bias, encroach on human rights, etc.. It is vital that tomorrow’s engineers be equipped with the tools to navigate these ethical dilemmas and make the moral decision.

By the end of the event, we want students to walk away knowing how their unique skill sets can be used to meaningfully contribute to (or build/design/engineer/problem-solve) the most pressing social and environmental issues our generation faces, and inspire them to collaborate and take action.
